What is a learning path?
A learning path lays content out as a route: nodes for lessons or levels, connected in sequence, with your position marked and future nodes locked. It borrows the world map from games (think Candy Crush or Mario) and applies it to courses, onboarding and skill trees.
The path answers three questions a list cannot: where am I, how far have I come, and what happens next. That spatial story is why path-based products feel finishable while course lists feel like homework.

When a learning path works
- The content has a real order: skills that build on each other, chapters, a difficulty ramp.

- Checkpoints group the path into sections, so long journeys read as a series of short ones.
When it backfires
- Forced linearity where none exists: locking independent content frustrates capable users.
- A path so long and flat it demoralizes: fifty identical nodes with no chapters or bosses.
- No skip or test-out: experts grind through beginner nodes and leave before the good part.
- The map is decoration: position does not persist or unlock anything, and users notice.

Chunk the path into worlds
Sections of 5 to 10 nodes with a checkpoint or boss at the end. Finishing a section is a real win; node 34 of 80 is not.

Lesson, practice, review, challenge, reward. When every node looks and behaves the same, the path stops feeling like a route.

Let people test out
A placement test or a 'jump ahead' challenge respects prior knowledge and keeps experts around. Locked-for-everyone is only right when the sequence truly demands it.

Frequently asked questions
When should I use a path instead of a list?
When order matters and completion is the goal: courses, onboarding, certification tracks. If the content is reference material people dip into, a path just gets in the way; use search and a library.
Should future content be locked?
Lock what genuinely builds on prior steps, and give a test-out for the rest. Locks create anticipation for beginners and resentment for experts; the skip hatch serves both.
How long can a learning path be?
As long as the content demands, as long as it is chunked. Fifty nodes in one stretch demoralizes; the same fifty as five worlds of ten with checkpoints read as five wins.
Does a path need a game look?
No. The mechanics (sequence, position, locks, checkpoints) carry the effect. A sober enterprise skin with subtle motion works fine; the cartoon map is a style choice, not the mechanic.
What should sit at the end of a path?
Something nameable: a certificate, a title, an unlocked capability, a final project. Paths that just stop leak users near the end; a visible finish line pulls people through the last stretch.
